Founded about 20 years ago in Bordeaux by Marie-Bernadette Charrier and Christophe Havel, Proxima Centauri is a chamber music ensemble of variable geometry including a saxophonist, an electro-acoustician, a flutist, a pianist and a percussionist.
Composer or pre-eminent soloists, all five musicians involved in this adventure share the same desire to promote contemporary music with concerts and educational programmes.
Placed under the artistic direction of Marie-Bernadette Charrier, the ensemble has developed an original and innovative repertoire, by interpreting works of contemporary composers as well as works of the 20th century great masters.
In this sense it proactively commissions composers such as T. Alla, J. Arroyo, C. Havel, P. Jodlowski, S. Movio, C. Maïda, H. Parra, DM Garin, F. Rossé…
Since its beginning, Proxima Centauri had a singular artistic approach by working with scenographers, dancers as well as light and visual artists.
Regularly invited to perform in France and abroad, the ensemble has taken part in many international events (SIMC, Ars Musica, Sonorities festival, Suona Francese, 38ème Rugissants, festival « Les Musiques », Sintese…) and had toured in Germany, Canada, Spain, Scotland, Mexico, Japan, Peru, Chili…
The ensemble Proxima Centauri is supported by the DRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Conseil Régional de la Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Conseil Général de la Gironde, Ville de Bordeaux, by Spedidam and Sacem.
